In November 2023, Intuit announced that the company would no longer sell subscriptions to new QuickBooks Desktop users effective July 31, 2024. Recently, the company relaxed the deadline, which now stands at September 30, 2024. It’s crucial that you and/or your clients thoroughly review the impact of this change on your usage to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises. For more details, see the discussion below.

What QuickBooks Desktop Subscriptions Does The New Policy Affect?

According to Inuit, the September 30, 2024 deadline applies to the following products.

    • QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
    • QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
    • QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
    • QuickBooks Enhanced Payroll

Thus, if a company is considering adopting one of these platforms, it must subscribe to the product of choice before September 30, 2024, according to Intuit. Otherwise, after that date, new subscribers will not have access to these four products.

Importantly, existing subscribers are not affected by Intuit’s new policy and can continue to renew their subscriptions. Additionally, Intuit stated that the company will continue to provide security updates, product updates, and technical support to subscribers. Also, the new policy does not apply to QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Further, it does not apply to subscribers outside the United States.

What About Existing QuickBooks Desktop Users Without Active Subscriptions?

There are potentially millions of small businesses using older versions of QuickBooks Desktop without active subscriptions. What impact does Intuit’s new policy have on these users and their companies? In short, users without active subscriptions will not be able to subscribe to QuickBooks Desktop after September 30, 2024. This means that these users will not have access to technical support or Intuit-provided add-on services, such as payroll and payment processing, unless they subscribe before the September 30 deadline.

What Happens If My Company Chooses Not To Subscribe Before September 30?

If, for whatever reason, your company – or a client’s company – chooses not to subscribe by September 30, your existing QuickBooks Desktop product will continue to run. However, as stated earlier, you will not have access to various integrated solutions, including QuickBooks payroll and Intuit-provided technical support.

Can I Convert My QuickBooks Desktop File To QuickBooks Online?

If you decide that continuing to use the QuickBooks Desktop platform is not a viable practice for your company, you can migrate your existing QuickBooks Desktop data into QuickBooks Online. To do so, open your existing QuickBooks Desktop file, click Company, and then click Migrate this Company file to QuickBooks Online. Next, choose the 30-day free trial option and follow the remaining prompts.

Upon the conversion process completing, your data will be available in QuickBooks Online. Notably, it will also still be available in QuickBooks Desktop should you decide that using QuickBooks Online is not for you.
